How to Protect Your Child from Sexual Abuse

Woman talking to her daughter about sexual abuse

"Sexual abuse is when a child or young person is pressurized, forced or tricked into taking part in any kind of sexual activity with an adult or young person"

Unfortunately, any child is at risk of sexual abuse. Hoping... denying... pretending... that this can't happen to your child is not lowering your child's risk of being sexually abused, and it does not prepare them to get help quickly and effectively if the worst does happen.

The reality of your child being sexually abused by an adult is a terrifying concept - but its something that every parent needs to face because knowledge is power.

Here is a list of things you need to teach your Child(ren) at an early age that can help protect them from sexual abuse

➲Warn your Girl Child Never to sit on anyone's laps no matter the situation including their own uncles.

➲Avoid Getting Dressed in front of your child once he/she is 2 years old. Learn to excuse them or yourself.

➲Never allow any adult--be it your relative or not refer to your child as 'my wife' or 'my husband'

➲Whenever your child goes out to play with friends make sure you look for a way to find out what kind of play or games they do because recently, reports show that young people also sexually abuse themselves.

➲Never force your child to visit an adult he or she is not comfortable with and also be observant if your child becomes too fond of a particular adult (be it relatives or not).

➲Once a very lively child suddenly becomes withdrawn you may need to patiently ask lots of questions from your child.

➲Carefully educate your grown-ups kids about the right values of sex. If you don't, society will teach them the wrong values.

➲It is always advisable you go through any new material like cartoons you just bought for them before they start seeing it themselves.

➲Ensure you activate parental controls on your cable networks and advice your friends to adopt the same especially those your child(ren) visit(s) often.

➲Teach your 3-year-old how to wash their private parts properly and warn them never to allow anyone to touch those areas and that includes you (remember, charity begins at home and with you).

➲Blacklist some materials/associates you think could threaten the sanity of your child (this includes music, movies, and even friends and families).

➲Let your child(ren) understand the value of standing out of the crowd.

➲Once your child complains about a particular person, don't keep quiet about it. Take up the case and show them you can defend them.

Remember, we are either parents or parents-to-be.

Finally, the abuse of a child is one of the worst things that a parent can ever have to deal with. It's important that you get help (if your child happens to be a victim) for yourself because without it you are unlikely to be able to support your child in the way they need. There are support organizations for parents of abused children in most countries in the world.
