Let’s take a look at the benefits of drinking lemon water and should you consider adding it to your daily routine?
LEMON WATER AIDS IN DIGESTION AND DETOXIFICATION
Anything that enhances or stimulates the liver has my vote! Our liver is referred to as the master gland in the body and in Chinese medicine, it is considered ‘King’. The atomic structure of lemon juice is similar to the digestive juices found in the stomach, and for this reason, it tricks the liver into producing bile, strengthening it to detoxify and flush out toxins. The bile will also help with moving food through your body and GI tract smoothly and efficiently.
Lemon water also acts as a mild diuretic, helps with digestion and hence regulates natural bowel movement.
HOW ABOUT GLOWING SKIN
It’s no wonder that lemon water is hailed as a miracle remedy for skin, ranging from acne, rashes, wrinkles, and dark spots.; it has powerful anti-bacterial properties, detoxifying abilities, is anti-inflammatory and a rich source of Vitamin C., The antioxidants found in vitamin C fight free radical damage, keeping your skin looking fresh and helping slow down the aging process, and the vitamin C keeps the body producing collagen which is essential in smoothing out fine lines in the face. Along with Vitamin C, lemons are also a rich source of potassium, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium.
ENHANCED IMMUNITY
Vitamin C is equally important when it comes to immunity and as a rich source of Vitamin C, lemon juice protects the body from immune system deficiency.
REDUCED JOINT AND MUSCLE PAIN
Due to its anti-inflammatory properties lemon juice with warm water also helps with reducing joint and muscle pain.
MAINTAINS THE pH BALANCE OF THE BODY.
Drinking lemon juice with water every morning helps in maintaining the pH balance of the body. Lemon becomes alkaline when it is in the body. (Link into my Acid/Alkaline blog post below)
HOW MUCH SHOULD I TAKE?
Typically half a fresh squeezed lemon in a cup of warm water first thing in the morning.
PRECAUTIONS
While lemon water is one of the safest drinks you can drink, the acids in lemon can eat away at your tooth enamel. You can, however, prevent this in the following ways; drink lemon water before brushing your teeth - the overnight bacteria will protect your teeth. Keep the water warm and not hot so you can drink it quickly. Have a few swigs of water after your lemon water and swill it around your mouth.
