Supermarkets employ over 30,000 Kenyans, most of them in urban areas like Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu. When it comes to salaries, they are among the worst employers compared to other sectors of the economy but the salaries of senior managers are a bit high.
There are over 50 supermarkets in Kenya but this article will focus on major supermarkets which pay reasonable salaries.
The best-paying supermarket is Nakumatt which employs a number of Kenyans and has branches in East and Central Africa.
The average salary of a Nakumatt supermarket cashier is Ksh 30,000 but there are a few who earn up to Ksh 40,000.
Senior Managers at Nakumatt earn up to Ksh 400,000 but branch managers earn an average of Ksh 150,000.
The second-best supermarket is Tuskys which is privately owned and ranked as the best in terms of customer service.
The average salary at Tuskys Supermarket is Ksh 25,000 but some cashiers earn up to Ksh 37,000 depending on how close they are to the management.
The third supermarket is Uchumi which pays Ksh 20,000, but the number of employees earn up to Ksh 30,000.
Senior Managers here earn up to Ksh 200,000 while branch managers earn Ksh60, 000-Ksh120, 000 depending on location.
Eastmatt Supermarket is not badly off. Most workers go home with Ksh 18,000 per month.
Note that most supermarkets in Kenya pay an average salary of Ksh 10,000.
