Raila Odinga’s campaign slogan Azimio La Umoja was reserved as a coalition name.
Registrar of
political parties Ann
Nderitu approved an application to reserve ‘Azimio
la Umoja‘ as coalition name.
ODM Director of
campaigns and Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohammed had written to Ann
Nderitu requesting former Prime Minister Raila
Odinga’s campaign slogan name be used as a coalition’s name.
In a letter to Junet
Mohammed dated Thursday, October 28, the registrar of political parties said
the request by the ODM party has been granted.
Registrar of
political parties Ann Nderitu approved an application to reserve ‘Azimio la
Umoja’ as coalition name.
“Your application
has been considered as required by law and the Azimio La Umoja has been
reserved for use as political party coalition name,” she said.
In the letter,
Nderitu further stipulated that an application for reservation of the name
shall be for a period of not more than 90 days.
Junet, who is the
Minority Chief Whip in the National Assembly, is also a member of the
Jubilee-ODM-led coalition-building team together with Jubilee Secretary General
Raphael Tuju, his ODM counterpart Edwin Sifuna as well as Jubilee vice chair
David Murathe.
Jubilee Secretary
General, Raphael Tuju, told journalists that they are seeking to woo other
political parties into their bandwagon to strengthen their Azimio la Umoja
ahead of the 2022 General Election.
He stated that the
party is engaged in talks with Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper, ANC (Musalia Mudavadi),
and Ford Kenya (Moses Wetang’ula after its merger with KANU was suspended.
“The only position
of Jubilee is that we are engaging with Wiper, ANC, and Ford-Kenya in the sense
that the vision is to bring the country together. So it’s not exclusive to ODM.
It’s just a matter of time and we will be announcing progress,” Tuju revealed.
This comes barely
two months after the Jubilee Party National Management Committee (NEC) and Parliamentary
leadership approved a pre-election coalition agreement with the Raila Odinga’s
ODM party, a deal that could see the two parties field one presidential
candidate.
