HANDLING KCPE AND KCSE CANDIDATES

Starting Friday 4th March 2022, 1.2 million candidates will sit for their KCPE national exams. It is an intense moment considering they are being tested under the 8-4-4 system, a system that has been criticized for being exam-oriented.

Every parent wants his or her child to excel. During the examination period, many are willing to do whatever it takes to enable their child to be the best. This includes giving them heavenly promises, changing their diet, and even closets.

While I have no problem treating your child special during such moments, my concern is how many practise this daily in their families. How many sustain such special treatments after the exams?

We have had of students who commit suicide because they did not attain the grades that could have earned them the presents promised by their loved ones. Some parents openly express their disappointments when their kids fail to excel even after doing everything it takes to motivate them. While academic excellence has been termed as the worst disease of the 8-4-4 system, my focus today is on how parents and guardians routinely relate with their children in comparison to special moments such as exam period

I certainly hold that we ought to exercise a consistent relationship with our children every time. They should not perceive that we treat them differently at certain times. Be always that loving mother to your son not only during special occasions like exams. Be that supportive father always. That special diet that you give them during exams, make it a habit even during other ordinary days. The greatest gift we can avail to our children is a continuous loving relationship at our homes
