What is a certificate of good conduct? Is it really necessary? If
so, how do I apply for a certificate of good conduct in Kenya?
You’ve asked yourself these questions when the term “certificate of good
conduct” popped up in one of your online or physical applications.
A certificate of good conduct, also known as a
police clearance certificate, is a document that lists an individual’s criminal
history, if any. This document acts as proof that you are a good and
law-abiding citizen. If you’re looking for a new job or planning to travel
overseas, you may be asked to provide a certificate of good conduct.
Here’s everything you need to know about this important document.
How to Apply for Certificate of Good Conduct
In most cases, you can obtain a certificate of good
conduct from your local police department. You will be required to
provide fingerprints and other personal information. Technology has made this
application process simpler using e-citizen.
A certificate of conduct in Kenya is mandatory for Kenyan
citizens applying for jobs in the public service sector. Additionally, some job
openings require applicants to attach a copy of their certificate of
good conduct in their application. The certificate is also used as a
pre-qualification for business directors looking to apply for tenders.
The categories eligible for the application of a certificate
of good conduct include:
- Kenyan
citizens
- Foreigners
- Refugees/Aliens

fingerprints are also essential in determining whether you appear in any
criminal records. Thus, your physical presence is significant. After submitting
the relevant documents to the nearest DCI offices or Huduma Centre, an official
takes you through the fingerprint registration, and you are good to go. Kenyan
citizens in the diaspora can visit the Kenya Embassy to submit their
fingerprints.

Does CRB Affect Certificate of Good Conduct?
Have you defaulted on a loan agreement and have been listed
in CRB? How will it affect your certificate of good conduct?
Most employers in the private sector may look at your credit
background before recruiting you. This is a way to determine your creditworthiness.
It also protects them from the danger of employee fraud. Debts may also affect
the productivity of their employees. However, it is not a criminal offence to
have debt. Thus, your criminal record is not affected even when you are listed
in CRB.
