In accordance with the amendment of the Finance Act, 2021 Section 31(1) of the Income Tax Act (ITA), Cap 470, members of the public are now eligible for Insurance Relief that includes contributions to NHIF.
The amount of Insurance Relief shall be fifteen percent of
the amount of premiums paid but shall not exceed sixty thousand shillings per
annum. Contributions to NHIF will therefore be eligible in the computation of
Insurance Relief as follows: -
Insurance Relief = 15% (Insurance Premiums + NHIF
Contributions) but shall not exceed Kshs. 5,000.00 per month or Kshs.
60,000.00 per year. The effective date of this amendment was 1st January 2022.
How to claim your NHIF relief
Step one
Log on to http://itax.kra.go.ke/kra - Portal
& download the income tax return form in excel.
Step two
Select 'YES' to the question 'Do you have an insurance
policy under the basic information sheet'
Step three
Go to sheet L- computation of insurance relief and capture
the pin of insurance company which is the National Hospital Insurance Fund
Step four
Select health from the drop-down under the type of policy.
Step five
Capture your NHIF no. as the insurance policy no. and select
self from the drop-down on the policyholder tab. Note you can obtain your NHIF
no. from your NHIF card, and your monthly pay slips, or send your ID ***as a text message
to 21101.
Step six
Enter the date of commencement as 01/01/2022 & the date
of maturity as 31/12/2022.
Step seven
Capture the annual premium paid. i.e. Kes 1700*12= Kes
20,400.
Step Eight
Capture the details of pension contribution under sr no.
11.1 if any on the last sheet T tax computation.
Step Nine
Enter the personal relief as per your p9 from under SR no.
12.6
Step Ten
Confirm the tax computation detail are matching P9 for the correct tax due/refund is calculated, validate and generate and upload file.
